Google buttons +1

By Maria Stadtmueller. Google has rolled out the +1 button. It features in searches and enables consumers to tag the results they like so others in a Google social group can see their preferences. A group comprises all those connected to a user via a Gmail address book, and those using the Google chat feature.

“The +1 button is shorthand for ‘this is pretty cool’ or ‘you should check this out’,” says the search giant. “Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.”

“In addition to showing the +1 on search results, the button will also be available for Google AdWords,” says SEWO outfit Jcyber. “When you see an ad you like, you can +1 it. This does not count as a click for the advertiser. Google feels that this will be a big plus for AdWord advertisers because people will be more likely to click on an ad that their friends have already +1′d.”

Bing vs. Google

When was the last time you Googled something?

Google has been a household term for nearly a decade, with many people using “Googling” as a synonym for “searching”, evidently, the majority has more than likely “Googled” something in our lifetime. Microsoft has every intention that “Binging” will soon succeed “Googling”, as a result of their recently released search engine- Bing.

Google takes the lead as one of the most widely used search engines with an estimated 2 billion searches a day back in 2008. Bing, however, seems to be creeping up in the ranks with an estimated 150,000,000 searches a day in 2009, according to an online statistic tracker. The two have grown significantly since then.

Google’s search engine dates as far back as 1996. Back then, it was a research project, but quickly developed into an incorporated company in September of 1998. What set Google apart from other search engines was it’s ground breaking Page Rank feature, which ranked the websites in terms of relevance to the search, by the importance of the web page.

Today, Google’s ease of use and quick search feature promises it as the number one used search engine on the Internet.

It’s main competitor is a Microsoft based search engine, called Bing. Bing is a new name to an older engine, MSN Search, which dates back as early as 1998. MSN Search has undergone many updates and changes, the result being many different names to the engine. In June of 2009, they officially renamed the search engine “Bing”. Over a month later, Microsoft partnered with Yahoo! Search Engine for a contracted 10 years, to power Yahoo!’s search engine.

Bing enables a feature of integrating Facebook friends into the search engine.

“Together, Bing and Facebook offer you better search results and a more personalized experience with the help of your Facebook friends” claims Bing on their discoverbing.com help page.

Bing promises to deliver more relevant searches than its counterpart, Google.

Renowned radio and television host, Ryan Seacrest, is endorsed by Bing and promotes it like it’s the new Google.

The name itself is different and chimes itself in as the sound of winning. Popular belief states that BING stands for “But It’s Not Google”.

Times Union lifestyle blogger, Kevin Marshall, begs to differ. Marshall performs about 5 to 10 searches a day, in order to obtain information for his lifestyle blog.

“I’ve found that Bing will give you the results it wants to give you, rather than what you’re looking for. Bing uses this as a selling point, but for someone who actually knows how to locate stuff on the internet, it’s more of an obstruction than anything else.”

“I like it better,” says Sarah Hinman, the News Research Director at the Albany Times Union, “they have a lot of features, such as a good entertainment section. They also have good visuals.”

After doing a comparison search between the two for “Obama quit smoking”, Bing brought my blog post on the Albany Times Union as the third result. Google, listed a story from the Huffington Post.

Rockstar Game Tips: L.A. Noire Pointers & Rare Vehicles

Time to hit the ground running with some solid tips - especially if you're still wearing the uniform seen above.

With intrepid gumshoes around the world playing L.A. Noire since its recent worldwide release, we've assembled a few helpful pro-tips to get you playing like an ace detective. Read on for those as well as for some locations of rare vehicles you may be having trouble locating in the game...

  • Keep an eye out for newspapers when on case as they give insight into why various characters are doing what they are doing and how stories are connected. There are 13 total newspapers in the game, and they do count toward 100% completion.
  • When driving, press 'Square' on PS3 or 'X' on Xbox 360 to get turn-by-turn directions from your partner. The same button can be used when you're walking around on a case and not sure what to do next.
  • The difference between choosing Doubt and Lie is that you need evidence to prove someone is Lying. You can choose Doubt if you think they're holding something back, but you don't have proof.
  • Intuition points can be used during questioning to 'Remove An Answer' and 'Ask The Community', but they can also come in handy when you are finding clues. In the notebook, choose Intuition and then 'Find All Clues'.
  • More powerful weapons can be acquired via the trunk of a police vehicle when in a shootout, in case you find yourself needing stronger firepower.

When at a crime scene, search everywhere for clues. But even more importantly, watch your partner. He may be looking at some evidence that you haven't yet noticed.

  • Use the in-game log to read everything that's been said by all characters while on a case. This can help during questioning, and in ways is more useful than the notebook. Press 'Start' and then choose 'Log'.
  • During the Patrol missions Cole will be armed with the Colt .38 hand gun. The only time that Cole flexes this is during the bank shootout in ‘Armed and Dangerous’. You can equip this by dropping the shotgun that you start with initially. This will help you towards getting the ‘Roscoe and Friends’ achievement/trophy.
  • Finding it hard to earn five star ratings on cases? Turn off both the 'Clue Hints' and 'Action Skip' options in the Gameplay settings, to instantly boost your ratings by 2 stars.
  • When chasing a suspect in a vehicle, be sure to drive along the left side of the vehicle to allow your partner to shoot out the tires and end the chase early.
  • A location will be crossed out in the notebook if all clues have been found there and if all witnesses and suspects have been questioned. If you have a location not crossed out, there is still something to be discovered.
  • After completing a desk, you can access Free Roam from one of the folders in the Cases menu, accessed from the main menu.
If you're going for 100% in L.A. Noire, there are 95 vehicles you'll need to find, along with completing all of the cases, street crimes and more. The Social Club 100% checklist will help you track all of this, and allows you to compare your progress to friends. Beyond that, we've got some tips of where to find some of the more rare vehicles and their locations after the jump (if you want to be able to find the vehicles for yourself without any help, feel free to skip the rest of this post!)...
